.Narayanan Krishnan was a bright, young chef with a five-star hotel group in Switzerland.
But a quick family visit before heading to Europe changed everything. 
    “I saw a very old man eating waste for food,” Krishnan said. “It really shocked me. After that, I started feeding that man and decided this is what I should do the rest of my life.”
    Krishnan was visiting a temple in the south Indian city of Madurai in 2002 when he saw the old man under a bridge. Impressed by the image, Krishnan gave up his job within the week and returned home to offer meals to that man, knowing that his new life would begin. 
    “That spark is a driving force still inside me as a flame. I wish I could serve all the mentally ill and poor people who cannot take care of themselves,” Krishnan said.
    The following year, he founded a non-profit group. The organization is named after the      “Akshaya bowl” from Hindu mythology (神话), a bowl without a bottom that can feed the hungry forever — just as Krishnan hopes his group will do.
    Each morning, Krishnan and his team get up at 4:00 a.m., and seek out (挑选出) the homeless throughout a large area, armed with hot meals that Krishnan has prepared by hand. He brings the meals to a crowd of about 400 poor people, and gives them free haircuts when they need. In the years since starting the non-profit group, he’s served over 1.2 million meals. 
    His recipients (接受者) are nearly all mentally ill, and not able to thank him, but Krishnan receives great pleasure from the work he does. “I get great energy from the people,” he said. “I want to save my people.”
