Text 1

M: Excuse me, but can you tell me how to reach the cinema?

W: Sure. Go straight for two blocks, turn left and walk three more blocks until you get to the drugstore. It’s right across the street.

M: Thanks a lot.

Text 2

M: Did all the students in your class pass the English test on Friday?

W: No, only forty-six passed. Although the test was very easy, six students didn’t do well.

Text 3

W: Are you going to the company picnic this weekend?

M: I was planning to work in my garden instead, but Mary has persuaded me to go.

Text 4

M: How I wish I studied harder when I was in the university!

W: You always said you didn’t think study was that important.

M: Yes, I know, but now I realize I was wrong and it’s too late.

Text 5

W: Your room is in such a state. When was the last time you tidied it?

M: It was when Linda came over last month. She’s been so helpful that I simply can’t do without her.

Text 6

W: Good morning, Clarks Hotel, Can I help you?

M: Hello, I’m just checking the room rates. How much are the single rooms, please?

W: Well, Sir. The singles are now from 180 to 240 dollars.

M: And the doubles?

W: The double rooms are now from 270 to 330 dollars.

M: That includes tax, I suppose?

W: No, but the price does include breakfast and the service charge is extra.

M: Thank you very much! I think I got that. That’s singles from 180 to 240 dollars, doubles to 270 dollars.

W: No. The prices of doubles are from 270 to 330 dollars.

M: Oh, I see. And can I get an extra bed if we need one?

W: Yes, of course! An extra bed is 45 dollars.

M: OK, that’s fine. Thank you very much!

W: You’re welcome!

Text 7

M: Ricky, what’s going on? Fred told me just now that you’re going to leave us.

W: Yes, I really feel bad about it. But B&D came up with a really good offer.

M: Well, I didn’t know that you were looking for a new job.

W: Well, just between you and me, and I think we have some real problems in this department. Don’t get me wrong. It has nothing to do with you, Frank. Everybody says that you are an excellent manager.

M: Problems? What problems? Do you have time to talk about it?

Text 8

W: I can’t believe this is our last year! College is going by so fast!

M: Yeah. Have you figured out what you are going to do after you graduate?

W: I’m going to become a programmer. Dr. Larson, you know in Computer Science, he thinks I’ve got a really good chance of gaining a job at Apple Computer.

M: Wow! The big time!

W: Yeah, how about you? Are you going to teach art?

M: I don’t think so. I really don’t want to teach art. I love art, but teaching is different. I’d like to become an artist. I don’t know. It’s difficult to find that kind of job.

W: Maybe you could work in advertising.

M: Yeah, something like that, but it’s almost impossible to get by on your own, you know, just be an independence free-lance artist.

Text 9

M: Have you thought of moving at all, Sarah?

W: We’re thinking about it, but my husband and I can’t afford it right now.

M: Buying a house can be expensive, but there are ways to find the cheaper houses.

W: Like what?

M: Well, you can buy a house far away from the city center. You will definitely save money by doing it that way.

W: That’s a good idea.

M: Sure. My sister-in-law and her husband just bought a house that way. They’re pretty satisfied with it.

W: Is the house pretty run down?

M: Not at all. The woman who owned it took good care of it, but when she died, she had no family left and no will. So the government had to sell it for her.

W: Was it a very old house?

M: It was about 75 years old. There were a few repairs that needed doing, but it didn’t take a lot of money or time.

W: Is it in a good location?

M: The area can be a bit rough in the evening, but the neighbors watch out for each other. So it’s OK.
